Vinyl Records – Sizes & Speeds Explained

7”, 10” or 12”?

Vinyl records come in three standard sizes: 7”, 10”, and 12”. Traditionally, 7” records are singles played at 45 RPM, while 12” records are typically used for full albums at 33 RPM. Maxi singles, which offer extended playtime, are often produced on 12” vinyl at 45 RPM for optimal sound quality.

33 or 45 RPM?

Speed matters. A 45 RPM record provides slightly better audio quality due to the faster rotation and wider groove spacing—ideal for singles and high-fidelity tracks. Albums, with longer run times, are generally pressed at 33 RPM to maximize space.

Center Hole Options

7” singles can be produced with either a small or large center hole. By default, we supply them with a small center hole, unless otherwise specified.

How Much Music Fits on a Vinyl Record?

The amount of music that fits on a vinyl record depends on its size and playback speed. Below, you’ll find average capacity guidelines—but keep in mind these are estimates. The actual playtime can vary based on the genre and sound dynamics. For example, dance music typically requires more groove space than classical or acoustic recordings.

Refer to the chart for standard specifications, and let us know your genre and mastering preferences so we can help you make the best choice for sound and quality.

Black or Coloured Vinyl?

Traditionally, records are pressed in black vinyl—and for good reason. Black remains the industry standard, offering the best overall sound quality due to its optimal material properties.

But why stop at black? We also offer a range of coloured vinyl options—both solid and transparent. You can even choose a fully transparent record for a unique visual effect.

Does colour affect sound quality?

Yes, but only slightly. Black vinyl provides the highest audio fidelity, followed closely by transparent coloured vinyl. Solid coloured vinyl tends to have the smallest dip in quality, but it still delivers excellent performance for most genres.

No matter your choice, we’ll help you find the perfect balance between visual impact and sound quality.
